Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kody really free?
Yes. The hosted plan is free with limited capacity, and the self-hosted plan is free with no limits. Kody is open source under the MIT license, and the self-hosted version will always remain free.
Can I use it commercially?
Absolutely. The MIT license permits commercial use with no restrictions. Use it for client projects, SaaS products, or internal tools.
Do I need my own AI?
Yes, you need an API key for any OpenAI-compatible provider (OpenAI, Ollama, vLLM, llama.cpp, or others). The hosted plan handles the server infrastructure for you, but the AI API key is always yours.
What about data privacy?
Self-hosted gives you full control over your data -- nothing leaves your servers. The hosted plan runs on EU infrastructure, and no messages are stored permanently. See our privacy policy at /privacy for details.
What's the difference between hosted and self-hosted?
Hosted means you use our server at api.kody.codai.app so you don't need to run your own. Self-hosted means you run the Kody server yourself. Both require your own AI API key. Self-hosted gives you unlimited sites and full data control.
Will there be paid plans?
Yes, a Pro plan with managed hosting and premium features is coming. The self-hosted version will always remain free and open source under MIT.
